Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS)

Contact Us

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a genetic disorder that affects the body's connective tissues, which support the skin, bones, blood vessels, and other organs and tissues. There are 13 types of EDS, but the most common is hypermobile EDS. Symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening and include:

  • Skin: Skin that's stretchy, velvety, and bruises easily. It may also be translucent or fragile, and it can tear out of stitches and leave crinkly scars.
  • Joints: Joints that are overly flexible and can dislocate.
  • Other symptoms: Painful joints, dental issues, headaches, flat feet, muscle weakness, dizziness, digestive issues, and trouble focusing.
  • Complications: Arterial rupture, organ rupture, chronic pain, and fatigue.

Treatments for EDS include drugs, physical therapy, and sometimes surgery. A medical professional can diagnose EDS.

There is no cure for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), but there are many ways to manage symptoms and prevent complications, among them is Physical Therapy.

Exercises can help strengthen muscles and stabilize joints. A physical therapist may also recommend braces to prevent joint dislocations. Joints with weak connective tissue are more likely to dislocate.

Dr. Perez can teach you exercises to help strengthen your joints, avoid injuries and manage pain.

it's important to prevent injuries. Here are a few things you can do to safeguard yourself.

  • Choose sports wisely. Walking, swimming, tai chi, recreational biking, or using an elliptical machine or a stationary bike are all good choices. Avoid contact sports, weightlifting and other activities that increase your risk of injury. Minimize stress on your hips, knees and ankles.
  • Rest your jaw. To protect your jaw joint, avoid chewing gum, hard rolls and ice. Take breaks during dental work to close your mouth.
  • Wear supportive shoes. To help prevent ankle sprains, wear laced boots with good arch support.
  • Improve sleep. Body pillows and super-dense foam mattresses can provide support and cushioning for painful joints. Sleeping on your side may also help.
